Tell
us about yourself. Well, I'm 17 (18 in May) and I'm
gettin' really worked up cos all my mates are 18 and I'm not!
I live in Waterloo and go to Sacred Heart Sixth Form College!
I love sprinting, particularly when I win in a fast time! Its
the best feeling in the world! I work in Slater Menswear in town
and I am a Sales Assistant, so I help the gents who come in get
their right sizes and try to advise them on fashion....?
How would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm, well I'm 5' 11" with shortish hair
which has vertually no colour! haha, I think its a like a sandy
blonde but people in school sometimes call me Graham cos they
think my hair is grey! But I don't think so, but just make your
own mind up! I am lively and fairly crazy, sometimes I like to
liven up our training sessions with a bit of a sing-song which
I am now renowned for! I'm usually an easy target for people to
pick on me cos I don't really care, so if anyone in the squad
feels like bullying someone I'm always there for them! I support
Everton! (that's all I have to say on the matter). I have a good
sense of humour and laugh at more or less anything!
What is your favourite subject at school?
I always hated Spanish, purely cos I couldn't get
to grips with learnin a new language. I think at the time I had
this mentality that everyone should all speak English cos we're
the best. I now realise that a view like that is quite stupid
and lazy, but I still haven't learned a foreign language. However,
I always used to love goin to Spanish cos I sat with my best mate
Andy Wright and we used to cry laughin in every lesson! My favourite
subject would have to be.......erm, PE I think. I found the theory
side of it really interesting and useful to my training. Plus
I just generally enjoyed the subject as a whole and so I am still
doing it now at A- Level and plan to carry it on to degree level!
How
did you get into athletics? Well I've got Big Paddy
O'Connor to thank for that! I remember in one PE lesson Paddy
said to me that I should come down to training at Edge Hill with
him and see how I got on. I turned him down more or less every
week for about a month but eventually (mostly just to shut him
up) I agreed to go down and I loved it! I think that was
about 3-4 years ago now.
Do you do any sports other than running?
I used to play Basketball a lot when I was in High
School. I never really got into it as much as I have done with
athletics though. I really enjoyed it though and played for the
school in most games. I still play a little bit now but I haven't
played a real game for years. I love playin footy with my mates
too, although I'm really quite poor at it. I usually just get
bunged on the right wing and get told to run!
What other things do you do in your
spare time? In my spare time I travel round the country
attending interviews like this one. That's only since I've gained
my celebrity status though. I was invited by Ant and Dec to go
on "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!" but I turned them down
because I'm involved in rigorous training at the moment. I have
recently been to Russia for dinner with President Putin though.
I took a week off just for him. It was mainly to build a few political
bridges between our two great nations. Seriously though, my life
isn't that exciting! I usually just chill with my friends and
just generally have a laugh!
Coming back to athletics, what are your
events? I'm strictly a sprinter and I do the 100m
and 200m (favouring the 200m). I have occasionally participated
in the odd long jump though, getting particularly poor distances.
I think the last jump I did was at Elsmere Port and I jumped about
2 metres and the rest were no jumps. Since then I haven't been
asked again!
Who is your coach? Graham
Pilkington! He's got one sicko look if he doesn't like ya, I get
that look all the time. And he's a legend in his own mind. However,
credit where credit's due, he's a very well respected coach and
he looks after us so we're lucky to have the guy! *cough* easy
session please *cough*
Tell
us a bit about your training We train at the new Litherland
Track. We also use the gym up there too. We also train in Stanley
High School on Monday nights doing circuits and plyometrics. I
train on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and sometimes
at the weekend doing sand dune training or hills if I'm off work!
What is your favourite session? I LOVE THEM ALL!!!
.....
What were your best performances?
My best performances were both at Wavertree in the 2005 Merseyside
Championships. I remember the final of the 200m and there was
only three of us running cos a few people had dropped out. And
I was in the middle with Alex Stokes staggered behind me. I came
off the bend ahead of the guy in the outside lane so I was feeling
happy but I could feel Alex behind me and coming up onto my shoulder
and with about 80m to go I think I just pulled away and ended
up winning by 0.4 secs And I can remember you, Ron, running over
to me and saying in complete awe "22.6!" and I think I was as
shocked as you because my previous best was about 23.4 secs! When
I received my medal I was told that it was a new record! Later
that day I was still bouncing after the 200m and I won the 100m
as well in 11.2 secs!
What does winning any race mean to you?
I love crossing the line first! I train hard so I can cross the
line first as much as I can. Obviously its more important in certain
competitions but anytime I win I feel great!
Who are your favourite athletes or role
models and why? Well
until we found out he was a cheat I really liked Justin Gatlin,
mainly because I liked his running style and technique but I also
admired him because he seemed quite down to earth. I also really
like Michael Johnson, I just generally think he's an absolute
beast! I think Darren Campbell is a dude as well. He was never
the best but he always represented us well. However, I've got
to say everything I do in training is trying to copy Drapes...such
a cool guy, what a dude. What else can I say?
Tell us about your athletics ambitions
I want to be just like Graham when I'm older......haha! Nooo,
in the distant future I just hope to be still involved! I'm in
Under 20's now, I would love to win a medal at any competition
like the AAA's, Northerns or English Schools before I get too
old!
Is there anything else you would like
to share with us? I've gotta be a bit of a suck up
and say thanks to Graham for the time he gives up. Also, we've
gotta mention everyone in The Squad....I'm not going to though....Just,
Hello to The Squad in general.
Thanks Eddie....nice one
