Dear Ron
I represented Southport/Waterloo AC from 1981 – 1983 at junior level.
I followed my older brother, Ian McDonnell, into the club and we
were both hurdlers. I read with pride that Ian was listed as the
record holder at U17 100m hurdles but see that my name was omitted
from the 400m hurdles.
I believe my time was better than that listed as the record during
the 1981 season. During this time the U17 boys team were in the
Northern Premier League competing against Leeds amongst others.
I am sure it was around this time that I would have broken 60 seconds
for the hurdles. Although time fades the memory,
I believe my best time was 56.1 seconds although I don’t know whether
this was representing Southport or not. The same year I was selected
to represent England Schools as I won The English Schools Championships.
I don’t know whether it is possible to research this further but
it would help put a stop to my brothers teasing.
I would also like to place on record my gratitude for the help of
George Bebbington and Ray Bishop who both showed great faith in
me, a faith I didn’t appreciate at the time but look back on fondly
now. Both myself and my brother live in California now but he checks
the records regularly to ensure his name is still there!!!
Thanks for taking the time to read this e-mail
Phil McDonnell
(Ed: Phil's time is indeed now recognised as the best by a Southport
Waterloo runner and he is now recorded as the U17 400m hurdles record
holder. In fact, Phil's best time was a superb 55.4 secs)

Ron,
Please give my regards to Steve James and all that remember me from
the good old days of the 80's. Congratulations also to Steve on his
run at the masters. I am still in running retirement due to feet and
knee troubles, plus being 13 stone doesn't help. Can it be 20 years
ago when I ran my 2.33 marathon and weighed in at 9 stone??? time
Flies. Once again regards to all and please pass on my e mail address
if anyone wants to write. If you are all near Oldham please give me
a call, 07884 263437. Regards, Steve Loker, ex athlete.

Dear Ron,
My brother Graham has very kindly contacted you on my behalf and you
will have a rough idea what this is all about. He also sent me Larry
Hyland's obit. and your S'port- Waterloo web details so I'm upto date.
I ran for S'port Harriers from leaving school in 1958 'thro to 1963,
and have in my possession the "Brian Aughton Trophy" which is the
club's senior cross country trophy! How I came to have it for the
last 40 odd years I am not sure. Either I won it three times and got
it in perpetuity, which I doubt, or I was the holder when S.H. subsided
circa 1963. I seem to recall winning it a couple of times, by a strange
coincidence beating L.H. into 2nd place. See the attached photo taken
at Larkfield Lane where we ran X-country from across fields that on
my last visit were covered in houses, supa mkts and car showrooms.
The other people in the photo are l-r Cliff Harris, son of the then
methodist minister in Marshside, LH, PM, Alan Bond a schoolmaster
who was sect. but also ran.
My idea, as the cup means very little to my kids, is to return it
to you when I am in S'port next June. I would like to think it can
go back to being the senior x-country trophy! I will get a plaque
put on recording it's history and provided you have no objection dedicate
it to LH's memory.
When LH worked for Brian Aughton before going on his own he got BA
to donate the cup. It was bought from a pawnshop in Eastbank St! and
the first time BA presented it he was on crutches as he had sawn off
the branch he was standing on and fallen out of a tree. When Larry
went off on his own we did an "in house' presentation.
Reading LH's obit if the John Wright mentioned is the same as had
a fractured skull after being knocked down by a car while training
on a winter's night circa 1960 and who I used to visit in Marshside
convalescent home he may remember me.
Looking at your website LH must have been very proud. It's funny but
W'loo were our greatest rivals in those days. In fact I recall sometimes
our senior champs. were held in conjunction with club matches against
them as we had so few runners to warrant a separate race. They ran
in black and gold hoops like wasps, and the only runner I can recall
was called Bertie who took out his full dentures to run - not a pretty
sight. In those days the whole club used to go to x-c matches in the
back of LH's van sitting on mattresses with a faint smell of fertiliser.
We only entered the Nationals when they were in the north as we couldn't
afford to stay away. One highlight I recall was finishing a team in
Blackpool circa 1962 and LH JW (running for L'pool) and myself beat
a very unfit Herb Elliot in knee deep mud on the racecourse whilst
he was running for Oxford Uni. Mind you we were all back in the 300's,
there were about 900 starters.
I was amused to see the S'port Visitor has kept up it's tradition
of printing the reports sent in by sporting clubs. This job used to
be mine as I worked in an insurance office and could get it typed
by bribing a girl in the typing pool (remember them!). The only problem
was you were at the mercy of the sub editor for headlines which led
to "Maloney wins again" something my family still throw at me. By
the way Frank Sellars who worked at the V. was a stalwart of the club
at that time.
I was peeved at LH's marathon time, circa 1961. We ran together in
a 16 mile road race in Oldham or Rochdale anyway a very hilly town
in the back blocks of Lancs. And after cajoling each other for the
last 5-6 miles finished as they say nowadays out of a podium place
and turning to each other vowed never to race over such long distances
ever again. I kept my side of the vow!!
I still run 2-3 times a week but only for 45 mins it's a bit hot here.
I ran a 10km fun run last year on a hilly course and was pleased to
record a time I was happy with.
I do hope I haven't gone on too much, starting to write this brought
back a lot of memories.
Kind regards,

I ran in the Larry Southport 5 today in memory of Larry whom I had
known for about 25 years and thought what a great occasion it was.
Originally I was one of the very few Waterloo Harriers left who
merged with Southport to form Southport Waterloo AC. I well remember
my battles with Steve James, who was a tremendous inspiration to
me and I knew I had run well when I beat him, even though he was
20 years older than myself.
I left the club in 1984 after moving to the Fylde but kept in contact
with ex-club mates at races such as the Mid Lancs XC and was please
to see how much SWAC grew in the following years.
I continued to run and have been Chairman of North Fylde AC for
almost 9 years so I wish you well in your new post. I am sure the
likes of Steve & John Wright will give you every support along with
Ron.
I was sorry when I heard that Larry had died earlier this year and
hopefully he was looking down on us today, smiling with the sunshine
and then the few tears of rain at the finish.
I wish you and SWAC all the best

Hi Ron, Sam Howard (Dean), I used to run for Southport Waterloo
few yrs ago now, and Larry was such a true kind gentleman, always
there on the mon nights at Christ King High School, always there
shouting to make you do more exercises, such a good trainer, always
there never missed a mon night that I know of, such a shame, such
good memories. Hi to anyone that remembers me.

Like all members of SWAC I was very sorry to read about Larry. Although
not racing anymore I still have fond memories of Larry, training at
Christ the King, Sunday mornings and racing. Larry was always a kind
man, especially when it came to his column in the Southport Visitor.
I can recall my early days of running back in the 80's, training hard
and not racing very well. Larry always had a kind word to say, helping
me and motivating me to stick with it. I still recall the times when
him and Johnny Wright would be cracking the jokes, especially at my
40th birthday. The world would be a better place if there were more
of the Larry's in it. Please give my regards to all that remember
me.
Steve Loker.

Sorry to read the news about Larry. He was for many years, along with
John Wright, the backbone of the old Southport clubs.

Hi Ron,
We've never communicated before but I've just stumbled across your
excellent SWAC site purely by accident.
Originally, back in 1973 I joined Waterloo Harriers & AC (I think
I still have my membership card somewhere!). The club was basically
kept afloat by the efforts of a man named Bill Poynor who, (then),
single handedly acted as coach, mentor and general taxi driver for
anyone and everyone associated with the club.
We were based at Chaffers in Waterloo.
Bill was an elderly man, a WW2 vet (ex navy) who once (as a pow )
- met none other than Rommell ! Anyway, I think the strain of keeping
the club together began to show. Sometime in late 1975 (I think),
Southport AC approached Waterloo Harriers with a view to merging and
consolidating their respective clubs interests and resources.
It made sense.
I attended the inaugural meeting of SWAC in (March or April ) 1976,
(or was it '77 ?) when the two clubs became one.
I sort of lost track of the sport after receiving an injury shortly
after and have now lived in the USA for nearly ten years. Reading
your website, I'm absolutely delighted the club has grown so much.
Best wishes and regards to you all at SWAC.
Allan K. Duggan
p.s. My PB for 800m at U14 was 2:05.8 - U17 1:57.6 ! Jeeeeeez .....
if I could do either (now that I'm in my 40's) .... I'd be happy !
